All About Maternity Photography – What you should know

Hello friends,

Most of the inquiries that land in my inbox are related to maternity or newborn photography. Clients have usually found me on Google or Yahoo, and they want to know what sets me apart from the other Atlanta newborn and maternity photographers. This is an exciting time for your family, and choosing the right newborn photographer or maternity photographer is a big part of preserving the memories you’re creating.

I have specialized in maternity and newborn photography for over ten years. I love documenting this precious time in a family’s story. Whether this is your first child and the start of a family or you’re adding another sibling to your bunch, the newness and excitement of a new life is worth celebrating!

Beyond the technical skill and expertise that comes with many years of experience as a photographer, my home studio is well equipped for every maternity or newborn session need. Maternity clients have a beautiful selection of maternity gowns in the studio from which to select – as well as flowing drapes, scarves and wraps. Many clients will also add a personal touch by bringing an item or two that’s a wardrobe favorite, such as a dress, lingerie or a sexy bra and panty ensemble. My recommendation is simple – bring one casual outfit that includes a shirt that will show off the belly (button down is best) with jeans or a skirt. If dad is participating in the session make sure he coordinates with the color scheme you’ve selected. Undergarments should be as close to flesh tone as possible. For the more intimate poses, many dads opt to go shirtless to match the mood of the portrait. It’s best for moms and dads to review my online maternity gallery together before the day of their session to decide how intimate they’d like for their portraits to be.

The optimal time frame for your portrait session is between 32 and 36 weeks gestation. This ensures that your body has a well-rounded shape (we do want to appear pregnant) while shooting early enough that you’re not in danger of delivering prior to your maternity session. Please try to book your session by 28 weeks to ensure availability, particularly if you need a Saturday session.

I will capture you in a variety of lighting patterns that will flatter your shape – keeping the belly prominent while minimizing parts that inevitably grow heavier with pregnancy. Light retouching of your skin in post processing coupled with the highest quality studio lights and modifiers means your final portraits will show you at your absolute most beautiful self!

Finally, just relax and let me worry about the details. Most couples leave their session telling me they were surprised at how much fun they had – and they were amazed at how easy it was to relax for their poses.
